Mekong Quilts was founded in 2001 as an income-generating project under with associated NGO, Mekong Plus. Mekong Quilts employs women in communities of Southeast Asia. This association also provides employment opportunities to Cambodian women through Mekong Quilts, a similar project located in the village of Rumdoul, near the Vietnam and Cambodia border. Currently, there are seven shops and over 340 women in full-time employees. The quilters receive training prior to be a full-time employee. This employment offer a fair wage and other benefits and work in a safe and comfortable environment. They get a raise in wages which helps them send their children to get education. All profits generated from the sale of the quilts are reinvested into the community through Mekong Plus which gives scholarships for children, agricultural training and micro-finance programmes, etc. Mekong Quilts’ support does not only reach the women quilters but also the poor communities. Quality of products made in Mekong Quilts have also higher qualities compared to other companies. Professional designers from the West countries suggests new ideas to the local designers which can choose from contemporary to Asian style designs.
